How it works

From invite to gift day in four steps

No spreadsheets, no hat full of paper, no group chat chaos.

  1. Create your exchange

Pick the occasion, set a price cap for each gift and share an invite link by text, WhatsApp or email.

  2. Everyone adds a wishlist

Each person adds 3 to 5 ideas from any store, all under the cap, plus a photo and a few fun clues about themselves.

  3. Draw my person

The organizer starts the draw. Each person taps a button and sees who they are buying for, with that person's wishlist. Nobody can see who drew them.

  4. Gift day: Guess Who

Givers read clues, everyone guesses, and then the gift and the giver are revealed.

See how it works in detail

Guess Who

Gift day becomes a game

Each giver reads clues about their person, from vague to specific, while everyone else guesses out loud. Then comes the reveal, with a big photo and confetti.

  • Clues come from each person's own answers. Givers can reorder, skip or add their own.
  • Runs on one shared screen, like a TV or laptop, or on every phone.
  • Optional. Skip it and reveal everyone at once if you would rather.

Clue 2 of 4

This person loves to cook.

They wear glasses.

Their hair is black.

Their name starts with M.

The keepsake

A tree your family fills every year

After the reveal, each exchange becomes a keepsake. For Christmas it is a tree with every person's photo as an ornament. For other occasions it is a garland of gift tags.

Tap an ornament to see who gave what, the clues that were used and a thank-you note. A new tree each year builds a collection your family can look back on.

  • A history of who gave what, year after year.
  • A picture of your tree you can share.

Quick answers

The questions people ask before they start.

Is Happy Giving really free?

Yes. There are no fees, no subscriptions and no ads, for the organizer or for anyone who joins. Happy Giving earns a small commission when people buy gifts through some of our links. That never changes what you pay. See how we make money.

How does the draw keep it secret?

The organizer starts the draw, and our server picks every pairing at once using a random shuffle. Your phone only ever receives your own pair, so nobody, including the organizer, has a screen that lists who drew whom. Each person taps "Draw my person" to see the name they are buying for. Nobody can see who drew them until the reveal on gift day.

The shuffle also makes sure no one draws themselves and respects any exclusions the organizer sets.

Why do you need at least 4 people?

With 3 people, every possible draw is a single loop, so once you know who you are buying for you can work out who is buying for you. With 2 people it is obvious. With 4 or more, a draw can have several possibilities, so nobody can be certain who drew them.
